Importance of checking tyre pressure
Most tyre damage is caused by incorrect tyre pressure. The tyre pressure varies for different loading and service conditions. The tyre pressure should be checked on a cold tyre. Tyre pressure increases when the car is being driven and air must not be reduced on warm tyres to compensate for this. Under inflation leads to excessive flexing, and hence a heat build-up that can damage the tyre.
Under inflation by 20% = loss in mileage performance by 19%.
Over inflation by 20% = loss in mileage performance by 22%.
Take into consideration only pressures with more than 10% discrepancy. Misalignment 1mm = 7% loss in tyre mileage.
Tyres must be inflated to the same pressure on any one axle. However, the pressure may differ from front to rear axle. Every time the pressure is checked, the spare wheel should be inflated to 7 psi above the specified pressure, so that it is also ready for use in an emergency. Under normal driving conditions, the tyre pressure should be checked every four weeks. But an extra check is needed, for instance, before setting if on a long journey. Insufficient pressure seriously detracts from the straight ahead tracking and the cornering of your vehicle.
Valve caps must be screwed on tightly. They protect valves from the ingression of dust or dirt that could cause air to escape. Missing valve caps must be replaced immediately.
